With five awards in four different media categories, the BBC has been given a ringing endorsement of the quality of its gardening output in the annual multimedia 'Oscars' bestowed by the Garden Writers' Guild.
At the Guild's 2007 Awards lunch at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on November 15, an audience of 500 creative professionals from the fields of horticultural publishing and broadcasting saw the BBC collect the awards for TV Broadcast of the Year (Grow Your Own Veg, produced by Juliet Glaves at BBC Birmingham); Radio Broadcast of the Year (Gardens of Faith, produced by Mary Colwell at BBC Bristol's Natural History Unit Radio for Radio 4) and the Electronic Media Award (www.bbc.co.uk/gardening, edited by Camilla Phelps for BBC Vision).
The corporation's BBC Worldwide arm also picked up the Magazine of the Year Award for its Gardens Illustrated periodical, edited by Juliet Roberts and followed up with the Journalist of the Year Award for Jane Moore, writing in its Gardeners' World magazine.
The Guild's Awards recognise exceptional creative and journalistic skills in garden broadcasting, books, magazines, newspapers, photography and electronic media. The other Award winners were:

Essex fruit expert, Ken Muir, 82, won the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Award. A prolific lecturer and regular contributor to gardening magazines and radio and TV gardening programmes, his book Grow Your Own Fruit is considered by many to be the definitive work on the subject.

Further Guild members were among the runners-up: Nicola Browne; Martyn Cox; Clare Foggett; Marianne Majerus; Clive Nichols; Adam Pasco; Gillian Plummer; Charles Quest-Ritson; Carol Sharp; Matthew Wilson.
Guild Chairman, Valerie McBride-Munro said: “The quantity and quality of the entries has been exceptional this year. I commend every winner - and especially the BBC for its outstanding achievement in winning awards in four different multimedia disciplines.”
